Writing Skills Development

Writing is a crucial skill in all areas of life, particularly business. Writing helps focus attention on sentence structure, spelling and vocabulary, while giving the teacher a good overview of a student’s strengths and weaknesses.

Our writing courses are aimed at improving confidence and composition accuracy. The curriculum covers summarizing, sentence structure and other skills that are central to the writing components of the TOEFL and other major ESL tests.


These courses are especially popular among businessmen who want to be able to write presentable E-mails for their work.

Lesson 1 – Conversational and written assessment of grammatical weaknesses and inaccuracies. Discussion of writing ambitions.

Lesson 2 – Development of purpose for writing with an emphasis on personal ambition. Grammar and fluency weaknesses in context: the tense system.

Lesson 3 – General writing techniques: daily routines and past experiences. Grammar and fluency weaknesses in context: components of a sentence, sentence types, clauses and conjunctions.

Lesson 4 – Development of purpose for writing with a more specific emphasis on work, study or personal interest in a specific topic. Grammar and fluency weaknesses in context: establishing arguments, using discourse markers to organize logical structures and flow and using rhetorical devices to persuade.

Lesson 5 – General writing techniques: expectations, ambitions and negotiating possibilities. Grammar and fluency weaknesses in context: writing a report, a speech or an essay.

Lesson 6 – Development of purpose for writing with a more specific emphasis on personal ambitions, problem solving and negotiation. Grammar and fluency weaknesses in context: using modal verbs and reported speech to convey possibility and narrative.

Lesson 7 – Specific writing techniques: specific discursive registers and vocabulary development. Grammar and fluency weaknesses in context: determined by the student’s personal writing ambition.

Lesson 8 – Development of purpose for writing with a more specific emphasis on different approaches. Grammar and fluency weaknesses in context: organizing information, declarative, speculative and conditional differences and writing for a specific purpose.

Lesson 9 – Specific writing techniques: extra-specific discursive registers, discourse-specific idioms and language patterns, argument and critical insight through written language and discourse-specific terminology. Grammar and fluency weaknesses in context: determined by the student’s personal writing ambition.

Lesson 10 – Development of purpose for writing with a precise emphasis on the student’s personal writing ambition. Grammar and fluency weaknesses in context: a review of the written forms particular to the student’s personal writing ambition.
